The rain was loud as it hit the window next to them, the summer heat pushing its way even through the walls. The dark sky lit up, followed by the rumble of thunder a few seconds later.
The storm had been raging all day, trapping them in school after hours or risk the weather. Rararin, Sumomone and Uiui had opted to stay and practice, already used to bringing their instruments to school with them anyway. GoGo Signals’ first performance was coming up, so they took any chance they could get to rehearse.
Their practice had come to a screeching halt however, when the power went out in the entire left wing of the building. Rararin had taken that moment to go to the bathroom, humming to herself as she left the room.
Sumomone groaned as she set down her guitar. “Aw man, right in the middle of the bridge too!” She sat down on an amp, pouting as she rested her chin on her hands. “I hope power’s back soon.”
She could hear Uiui open up her water bottle next to her. “How long’s it usually gone?”
“Eeh, depends. Last year our middle school lost power all day but the principal didn’t wanna let us go home cus ‘what if that’s when power comes back’! Didn’t get power back til the next day, that time. Some trees falling on a powerline or something, I don’t really remember.”
Uiui hummed, stepping over to the window. She had never seen the city so dark before. Her eyes followed the figure of someone running down the street, their umbrella turned inside out by the wind. She let out a tiny huff of amusement as she leaned against the windowsill. “I think it’s pretty.”
“What, the power outage?”
“The lightning.”
Sumomone let out a little noise of disagreement. “You think so? I think it’s annoying.”
Uiui’s eyes stayed trained out the window. A flash of lightning struck, outlining her body in white, the rest of her shrouded in darkness. Sumomone got on her feet, coming to a stop next to Uiui. “I don’t really get it,” she said, bouncing on her toes for a moment before settling with her back against the window frame. “I guess I prefer the city lights.”
“I guess.” Uiui cast a glance at her, just as another lightning bolt lit up the sky. “The power going out means I can do this without anyone seeing, though.”
“Do what?”
Sumomone squeaked as she turned to look at Uiui, finding her face right in front of her own. Her face was so close she could feel her breath on her skin. For a moment, Uiui paused, gauging her reaction, before leaning in the last few centimeters that still separated them.
Her lips were soft and warm. Their touch made Sumomone feel like she was floating on air.
When Uiui started to move back, Sumomone didn’t let her, chasing her lips until she could feel them against hers again. Her hands cradled Uiui’s cheeks as she kissed her again and again. She felt Uiui’s arms wrap around her waist.
When everything became brighter, they initially mistook it for lightning. It flickered, and then, a moment later the lights turned on. Rararin’s footsteps carried through the door from the hallway, and they could hear her talking to someone as the power came back on in the rest of the building.
Uiui pulled back, leaning against the window sill. Sumomone traced her lips. They felt as if they were just as electrically charged as the clouds, leaving her fingertips tingling.
They exchanged glances, shoulder pressed to shoulder.
When Rararin stepped through the door, she was left none the wiser. They’d tell her at some point, but for now, they wanted to keep things to themselves.
